About TMF

The Minneapolis Foundation:

Established in 1915, The Minneapolis Foundation is one of the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations.

We manage nearly $500 million in assets, and administer more than 1,000 charitable funds created by individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits. More than $30 million in grants are distributed from these funds each year, either personally recommended by or in accordance with the legacy wishes of our donors. TMF staff work with fund holders by providing information on their areas of interest, offering advice on their grantmaking if requested and connecting them to resources to be effective grantmakers.

The Minneapolis Foundation also builds and stewards a charitable endowment.  We distribute approximately $5 million annually from the endowment to improve the quality of life in our community.

Community Foundations:

Each community foundation is made of up a collection of charitable funds established by various donors, then pooled and invested by professional managers so the income provides an ongoing, steady resource for community giving. As the needs of community change, the foundation responds accordingly.
Those who conduct their charitable giving through a community foundation can make contributions for the general benefit of the community, as guided by the foundation, or designate their funds for specific purposes.  Donors can contribute to local, national and international causes through their community foundation.  There are no geographic boundaries to the term “community.”

There are more than 600 community foundations in the U.S. with more than $15 billion in combined assets, contributing more than $1 billion per year to not-for-profit organizations.
